Mercy's Matt Walsh Earns ECC Baseball Rookie of the Week Honors
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Freshman outfielder/pitcher Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) earned East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Rookie of the Week honors, as announced on Monday.
Walsh hit .471 (8-for-17) in four games with two runs driven in and was a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts. He went 2-for-2 with two steals (one of home) against Dowling and pitched 5.2 innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts. He also went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases in Mercy's first of three wins over Bridgeport.
For the season, Walsh is leading the Mavericks in hitting at a .333 clip. He leads the team with 11 stolen bases and is tied for the team lead with 14 runs scored. On the mound, he has a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings pitched. He has struck out nine batters and allowed only two extra base hits.
Mercy is 8-13 overall and 4-3 in ECC action after a series sweep of Bridgeport, the program's first three-game sweep since 2001. The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1 at Dowling College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
