Mercy opened up the first game with three runs in the first frame, getting runs batted in from Pannullo, Summer, and Ross. After Bridgeport pushed across a run in the second, the Mavericks got it back on an RBI single from Walsh in the bottom of the inning, and added a run in the third on a Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) single.
After the two teams traded runs in the sixth and Mercy led 6-2, Bridgeport tied the game in the seventh taking advantage of a Maverick error and a three run home run off the bat of Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, CT).
The Purple Knights went ahead 7-6 in the top of the eighth, but the Mavericks responded with two runs to regain an 8-7 edge in the bottom half on run scoring singles from Pannullo and Ross. Moreno then came on in relief and after allowing a leadoff single he retired the next three batters, including a game-saving catch by Pannullo into the right center field fence.
Game two saw the Mavericks jump out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI double from Summer in the bottom of the first inning. While Marsar was holding Bridgeport to one hit through four innings, Mercy added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on base hits from sophomores Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) and Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY).
The Purple Knights cut the margin to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI single from Nate Leva (Cambridge, MA), but the Mavericks added three insurance runs in the sixth, getting two on a single by Summer. Marsar gave way to Moreno who set Bridgeport down in order in the seventh.
Mercy and Bridgeport will complete their three-game series on Sunday, March 30, with a single game at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
