Mercy Baseball Falls 6-5 in Extras at Dowling

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision in 10 innings at the hands of host Dowling on Wednesday.

The Mavericks (5-13, 1-3 ECC) collected 14 hits on the day, getting at least one from every starter in the lineup. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) led the attack by going 3-for-5. Sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) and freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) each added a pair of hits for Mercy.

Walsh also contributed on the mound, tossing 5.2 innings of solid relief, allowing just one run on one hit and fanning four.

Dowling (11-8, 2-2 ECC) pinch runner Elvin Medina (Valley Stream, NY) scored the game-winning run on a slow grounder up the middle off the bat of Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY) to complete the comeback.

Mercy had pulled ahead in the top of the 6th with three runs after trailing 3-1. Dern dropped in an RBI single to right field for the first tally.  The tying run would come on a steal of home by Walsh.  The runners would move up and Dern went on to score the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

A sacrifice fly by Kevin Reese (Ronkonkoma, NY) in the bottom of the 8th tied the game at 4-4.  Mercy loaded the bases in the ninth, but Dowling reliever Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY) would come on in relief and get out of the jam.  The Mavericks loaded the bases again in the 10th, and again Dern singled to right field, plating the go-ahead run.

A leadoff walk, error and bunt single loaded the bases for freshmen Ralph Tufano (Staten Island, NY) in the bottom of the 10th. He delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at 5-5.  An intentional walk would load the bases again with one out for Squeri who delivered the game-winner.

The Mavericks will try to bounce back on Saturday, when they host Bridgeport in an ECC doubleheader beginning at Noon.
