New Haven Tops Mercy Baseball 4-3 in 11 Innings

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  Tom Rombilus (Monroe, CT) knocked in the game-winning run with an infield single in the top of the 11th inning as the University of New Haven defeated host Mercy College 4-3 in East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball action on Monday.

New Haven (6-10, 2-1 ECC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, pushing across a run on an RBI single by Chad Lemos (No. Dartmouth, MA).

Mercy (5-12, 1-2 ECC) responded with two runs in the bottom half, getting an RBI from Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) on a fielder's choice and another run on the same play following an error.

The Mavericks added a run in the third frame on a base hit by Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) inside the first base bag that plated Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) after he doubled with one out to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Left-hander Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) continued to keep the New Haven offense at bay until the seventh inning when the Chargers capitalized on a Mercy miscue that led to a pair of runs, knotting the game at 3-3.

The contest remained tied until the top of the 11th as Dan Rosa (Bristol, CT) got things going for New Haven with a one-out single.  After a fly out, he stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring the go ahead run on the Rombilus infield hit.

 Matt Moreno

The Mavericks threatened in the bottom half of the inning as Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) and Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) led off with back-to-back base hits, chasing reliever Mitch Rossi (Bristol, CT).  He gave way to Dan Johnson (So. Kingstown, RI) who got the next three batters in order to end the rally and the game.

Merslich went the first 7.1 innings for Mercy, allowing just one earned run on only four hits and striking out five batters.  Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL) worked one scoreless inning of relief and Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) did not allow an earned run in 2.2 innings for the Mavericks.  Dern led the offense going 2-for-4.

Rossi tossed four innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for New Haven, striking out five batters and scattering three hits. Rombilus finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs driven in and Lemos went 2-for-5 with his RBI.

The Mavericks are back in action on Tuesday, March 25, with a 3:00 p.m. start at Southern Vermont.
