Mavericks Split with New Haven to Open ECC Baseball Play
WEST HAVEN, CT - The Mercy College baseball team opened up East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a split of a doubleheader at New Haven on Saturday. The Mavericks took the first game by a score of 9-2 before falling 4-3 in the second tilt.
Mercy (5-11, 1-1 ECC) collected 11 hits in the opener, led by senior first baseman Steve Summer's (East Meadow, NY) 4-for-5 performance. Senior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and junior second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) was 2-for-4 with a pair driven in.
Freshman right-hander Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) improved to 3-0, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five over the first seven innings. Junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) tossed two scoreless innings in relief to close it out.
New Haven (5-10, 1-1 ECC) pushed across single runs in the first and third innings. The Chargers carried the 2-0 lead into the fifth, when Mercy took advantage of a pair of fielding errors and got run-scoring singles from Ross and junior outfielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) to go ahead 3-2.

While Marsar kept New Haven in check, the Mavericks capitalized on another Charger error in the eighth, got another run when freshman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and received a two-run single from freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY), extending the margin to 7-2. They put it away with a two-run single off the bat of Mundy in the ninth.
In game two, the Mavericks struck for a run in the second inning and added a pair in the fourth on a bases loaded double from sophomore Mike Grassano (Valley Stream, NY) to take a 3-0 lead.
The Chargers answered in the bottom of the fourth with three unearned runs to tie it up at 3-3. The contest remained deadlocked until the home half of the seventh when Kyle Donnelly pushed across the decisive run for New Haven with a squeeze bunt down the third base line.
Freshman right-hander Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) worked the first five innings for the Mavericks, allowing no earned runs and fanning six batters. Mitch Rossi earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief for New Haven.
The Mavericks and Chargers will meet again on Monday, March 24, for the final game of their series. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Mercy College.
