Bloomfield Takes Mercy College Baseball 8-6

BLOOMFIELDNJ -  The Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision at the hands of host Bloomfield College on Monday. The Mavericks fell to 4-10 overall, while the Deacons improved to 6-12.

Mercy rallied from a 6-2 deficit with a four-run seventh inning, but Bloomfield answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead and held on from there.

Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked in three runs on the day for Mercy, while junior outfielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) drove in two.

Mercy built a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Summer, but Bloomfield responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the third, freshman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY) scored again on another Summer sacrifice fly, but this time the Deacons bounced back with three runs to build a 5-2 advantage.

After Bloomfield added a run on an Alex Munoz home run in the sixth, the Mavericks posted four runs in the seventh to knot the contest at 6-6. Summer began the rally with an RBI single and Pannullo tied the game with a two-run pinch-hit single.

Once again the Deacons had an answer in the bottom of the seventh, this time with an RBI single from Alex Sepulveda and an RBI ground out by Jonathan Moehlig to take an 8-6 lead. Sean Stimpfel then came on in relief, tossing two scoreless innings to close it out for Bloomfield.

The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, March 19, with another non-conference game at Briarcliffe beginning at 3:30 p.m.
