Mavericks Split with Mount Saint Vincent, Take Opener 9-2, Fall 4-1 in Game Two

YAPHANK, NY - The Mercy College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader versus Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday at Baseball Heaven.  The Mavericks took the first game by a score of 9-2, before falling in the second contest, 4-1.  Mercy is now 2-5 overall and the Dolphins open their season at 1-1.

While freshman right-hander Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) gave the Mavericks six strong innings to earn his first collegiate win in the opener, the offense staked him to a 9-0 lead through the first five.

The Mavericks put two men on with two out in the first inning, and benefited from an infield error and a wild pitch to score the first two.  They took advantage of another Dolphin error to stretch the margin to 4-0 in the second frame.

In the bottom of the third, sophomore shortstop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) delivered a three run blast over the right center field fence on a 0-2 pitch to give Mercy a 7-0 advantage.  Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) laced an RBI double in the fourth, and senior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) added an RBI double in the fifth to make it 9-0.

Mount Saint Vincent got its two runs in the sixth on a two-run double off the bat of Al Schorr, but freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY), freshman Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL), and junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) each tossed an inning of shutout relief to seal the win.

DiCarlo allowed only four hits and struck out eight batters. Ross finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk, while Summer and sophomore center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) each had a pair of hits for the Mavericks.

Game two saw Mount Saint Vincent left-hander Anthony Palandro keep the Mercy offense in check, allowing no earned runs and just one hit, while fanning six batters.

The Mavericks' hit came in the first frame, an RBI single from junior left fielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) after an error extended the inning.

Mount Saint Vincent responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead and the Dolphins would add a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Schorr.

Mercy threatened in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but Mount Saint Vincent reliever Joe Blackford got the next two batters to close the game out.

Mercy's next scheduled contest at Dominican on Monday has been postponed with no make up date announced yet. The Mavericks will now look to take on Pace on Wednesday, March 5.
