Mavericks Rally Late but Fall to Caldwell in 10 Innings, 4-3
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mercy College baseball team rallied late from a 3-0 deficit, but fell short in extra innings to Caldwell 4-3 on Sunday. The Mavericks are now 1-4 on the year.
Sophomore Marc Dern went 2-for-3, and freshman Graig Lauricella was 2-for-5 on the day. Freshmen Matt Walsh and Mike Ferrante each drove in runs for the Mavericks.
Freshman starter Anthony DiCarlo gave Mercy a strong 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out three. Freshman Alex Rodriguez and junior Matt Moreno followed with a combined five innings of solid relief with six strikeouts.
Caldwell struck for a run in the first inning and added two runs in the fifth to build a 3-0 margin. The Mercy bullpen held strong from there, posting zeros over the next four innings.
Meanwhile, the Maverick offense pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh, getting a pinch-hit RBI double from Walsh, and a run-scoring ground out from Ferrante, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Mercy went on to tie the game at 3-3 in the ninth when pinch runner Joe Benedict scored on a wild pitch.
The contest looked as though it would go to the 11th inning, but with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Chris Chiarappa doubled for Caldwell and Adric Saxon's single brought him home with the deciding run.
The Mavericks are slated to be back in action on Friday, February 29, versus Bentley at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY.
