Mercy College Baseball Defeated by Briarcliffe 16-4, and West Chester 7-1
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Saturday at The Ripken Experience, falling to Briarcliffe by a score of 16-4 in game one, and 7-4 to West Chester in the nightcap. The Mavericks are now 1-3 on the year.
Freshman Steve Campbell (Staten Island, NY) went 4-for-6 on the day with a double and a pair of runs batted in. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) and freshman Darold Martinez (Yonkers, NY) added a pair of hits each for the Mavericks.
In the opener, both teams traded runs in the first inning, before Briarcliffe posted seven more in the second to build an 8-1 lead. They added four more runs in the third frame, added single runs in the fifth and sixth, and two more in the seventh. The Mavericks got an RBI ground out from Summer in the fourth, and an RBI double by Campbell in the fifth. Campbell later added a run scoring single in the seventh. Sophomore Frank DeRosa (Harrison, NY), freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) and Summer each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
West Chester opened game two by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. They added three more in the fourth and a single run in the sixth to build a 7-0 lead. Mercy got its run on a Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) continued his solid pitching, giving the Mavericks 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. Junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) added two more innings of scoreless relief.
Mercy will close out its trip to Myrtle Beach with a 1:00 p.m. contest versus Caldwell on Sunday.
