Mavericks Split to Open Season, Fall to Bloomfield 7-6, Bounce Back with 5-3 Win Over Felician
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mercy College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games to open the 2008 campaign at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Friday. After getting edged 7-6 by Bloomfield in the morning, the Mavericks bounced back with a 5-3 triumph versus Felician in the afternoon.
Sophomore Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) went 4-for-8 on the day with a double, one RBI, and a stolen base. He went 3-for-4 in the opener and 1-4 in game two. Sophomore Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) was 3-for-8 with a triple and a pair of singles. Junior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) and senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked in two runs each for the Mavericks.
In the opener, Mercy struck for a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), but Bloomfield answered with three runs in the second inning. After the Deacons added three more in the top of the fourth, the Mavericks got one back in the bottom half on an RBI ground out by sophomore Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY).
Bloomfield added a run in the fifth to build a 7-2 lead, but the Mavericks came back with three runs in the sixth, two on Summer's double to right center, cutting the deficit to 7-5. They got one more in the eighth to pull within a run, but Bloomfield's John Whitley closed it out in the ninth.

The Mavericks scored in the first again versus Felician and added a run in the second on an RBI single by senior Julian Tosado (Miami, FL). After Felician got a run in the fourth inning, Mercy got it back in the seventh before Felician scored again in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-2.
The two teams traded single runs again in the eighth, but the Mavericks added an insurance tally in the ninth on an RBI single from Mundy. Junior Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) then came in to get Felician in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Freshman right-hander Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) earned his first collegiate win, giving the Mavericks two innings of scoreless relief after junior right-hander Bobby Engelhard (Oceanside, NY) allowed one earned run over the first four innings.
Mercy's bullpen tandem of Marsar, Moreno, and freshmen Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY), Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL) and Keith Kreig (City Island, NY) combined to go 10.1 innings on the day, allowing only three hits and three runs.
The Mavericks will play two again on Saturday at The Ripken Experience, opening the day at 4:00 p.m. versus Briarcliffe, followed by a tilt with West Chester at 7:00 p.m.
