Mercy College Baseball Rolls to a 9-2 Victory Over Queens on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team posted a 9-2 win over visiting Queens College in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Sunday, May 6.  The Flyers honored their five seniors in a special presentation prior to the contest.

Senior right-hander Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) worked the first six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three batters as he evened his record at 2-2 on the year.  Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) was one of five Flyers with two hits on the day, including his team-leading fifth home run of the season.

After Lozano worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, Summer gave Mercy (3-40, 3-24 ECC) a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo shot to right center field.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Mercy sent 10 men to the plate, scoring six runs to stretch the margin to 7-0.  Summer ripped a two-run double in the inning and freshman short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) tripled to drive in another run.

Lozano took a shutout into the seventh before Queens (7-28, 5-22 ECC) pushed across two runs on a Michael Sporton single.  Junior left-hander Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) came on in relief to get three fly balls and put an end to the threat.

Mercy got both runs back in the bottom of the frame, getting a run-scoring single from freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY), who later scored on an errant throw after stealing second and third base.  Merslich went on to throw two more scoreless innings to close out the game.

Summer finished the contest 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY), freshman designated hitter Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), and Muscarella each had two hits for Mercy. Senior catcher Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY) added an RBI double, and senior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Merslich did not allow a hit and walked just one over three innings to earn his first save.

John Palladino allowed just one earned run over five innings for Queens.  Short stop Maurice Santana led the Knights' offense by going 3-for-5.

Mercy will return to action on Monday, May 7, with its final home contest of the 2007 season versus Mount St. Vincent at 3:30 p.m.
