FLUSHING, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell to Queens College in both ends of an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader on Saturday, May 5.  Queens won the first game by a score of 7-3, before taking game two with a 5-2 decision.

Sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY), freshman catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), and senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) each had a pair of hits in the opener.  Freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) had Mercy's lone hit in game two.

The Flyers (2-40, 2-24 ECC)  took advantage of a pair of errors to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, but Queens (7-27, 5-21 ECC) scored three times in the bottom of the inning.  The Knights posted three more runs in the fifth and another in the eighth, extending the margin to 7-1. Mercy pushed across two runs in the ninth, collecting singles from Mundy and Dern, but the Queens bullpen held from there.

Mercy jumped out in front again in the second game, this time scoring twice in the top of the first without a hit. Queens tied the game in the third and went ahead 5-2 with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. The score held up from there as Queens starter Robert Standish took a no-hitter into the seventh before Tesoriero broke it up with a one-out base hit.

Sophomore Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) struck out 10 over six innings for Mercy in game two. Junior Matt Anzivino (Miami, FL) allowed four earned runs on five hits over eight innings in the opener, fanning three batters.

Mercy and Queens will complete their series on Sunday, May 6, with a single game beginning at Noon, at Mercy.
