Mercy College Baseball Falls to Molloy, 7-5

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision to visiting Molloy College on Wednesday, May 2.

Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY), junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), and freshman catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) each had two hits and a run driven in for the Flyers.

Molloy (20-24, 10-14 ECC) got on the scoreboard first, posting three runs in the top of the second inning on only one hit.  The Flyers (2-37, 2-22 ECC) got one back in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY).

The Lions added two runs in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Chris Irwin, and took advantage of a Mercy error to build a 5-1 margin. The Flyers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, but Molloy came right back with two more in the sixth on back-to-back solo home runs by Patrick Walsh and Thomas Reo.

Mercy countered again with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within two at 7-5.  Johnson drove in the first run with a single.  Two batters later, Ross delivered a sacrifice fly and Dern plated another run, but the Molloy bullpen held the Flyers scoreless over the final three innings.

Peter Reiger-Maresca picked up the win for Molloy, allowing two earned runs over the first five innings, and Scott Porter notched the save with a scoreless ninth inning.  Mercy got 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief from junior Matt Anzivino (Miami, FL) and sophomore Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY).

The Flyers will return to action with a non-conference game at Briarcliffe on Thursday, May 3, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
