Mercy College Baseball Topped by Bridgeport, 14-8

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team collected 14 hits, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers dropped a 14-8 decision to visiting Bridgeport on Tuesday, May 1.

Freshman short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) led the Mercy offense by going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in on a pair of home runs. Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) went 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs knocked in.

Bridgeport (20-10, 17-7 ECC) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after striking for two runs in the first inning, five in the second, and three more in the third.  Mercy got one in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Dominick Callegari (Kings Park, NY), but the Purple Knights answered with three runs in the fourth, stretching their lead to 13-1.

Mercy (2-36, 2-21 ECC) came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 13-4, getting two on Muscarella's first round-tripper of the day, and another on an infield error.  After Bridgeport added a run in the fifth, the Flyers cut into the margin again, this time with three runs in the seventh on a two-run blast from Summer and a solo shot from Muscarella.

Mercy threatened once more in the ninth, getting a run on an infield ground out, but Bridgeport reliever Riley Shuckerow got the final out on a line drive with the bases loaded.

Callegari went 2-for-5, while sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) and junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) both went 2-for-4 on the day. Senior right-hander Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) gave Mercy 5 1/3 innings of solid relief and Mundy came in to work a scoreless ninth.

Mercy is back in action again on Wednesday, May 2, with a home game against East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Molloy at 3:30 p.m.
