UMass Lowell Slips Past Mercy Baseball, 9-8
LOWELL, MA - The Mercy College baseball team rallied from behind, but fell short by a score of 9-8 at UMass Lowell, currently ranked No. 3 in the region, on Monday, April 30.
Sophomore first baseman Joe Benedict (Harrison, NY) went 2-for-3 on the day for Mercy (2-35), while freshman third baseman Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX) and junior second baseman Dominick Callegari (Kings Park, NY) each went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Mercy's junior starter Erik Dodge (Fabius, NY) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but a pair of errors in the first inning led to a run for the River Hawks. The Flyers tied the game in the third, getting an RBI single from Torres after Callegari doubled with two outs.
UMass Lowell (29-15) finally broke through in the fifth frame, posting three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Flyers bounced back with three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Senior catcher Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the first run, followed by an RBI double from freshman short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY), and a run-scoring single from junior right fielder Luis Bido (New York, NY).
After the River Hawks scored four times in the seventh to regain the lead at 8-4, the Flyers cut into the deficit again with a pair of runs in the eighth, but UMass Lowell got one back in the bottom of the frame to build a 9-6 margin.
The Flyers mounted one more rally in the ninth, getting RBIs from junior center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) and junior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), but River Hawk reliever Pat Donovan got the final out with the tying run on second base.
Mercy will resume East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Tuesday, May 1, with a home game versus Bridgeport at 3:30 p.m.
