ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair in East Coast Conference (ECC) play at Molloy on Sunday, April 29. The Flyers fell 13-5 in the opener and 12-7 in game two.
Sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) had three hits on the day, including a pair of home runs, and drove in four runs for the Flyers. Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) went 3-for-6 with a home run, and junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) went 3-for-7 with a triple and two runs batted in.
Mercy (2-34, 2-20 ECC) got on the scoreboard in the first inning of the opener as Mundy led off by connecting for his first round-tripper of the day on the second pitch he saw.
The Flyers then added four runs in the third inning, getting an RBI single from Ross and a two-run single from senior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL), but Molloy (18-24, 8-13 ECC) scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Lions tied the contest at 5-5 in the sixth before posting four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to put the game away.
Molloy struck first in game two, putting up a run in the second inning. Mercy responded by sending 10 men to the plate in the third frame, scoring six times. Mundy plated the first three runs with his second home run of the day. Ross, Jonathan Cohen (Roslyn Heights, NY) and Vinnie Tessoriero (Glen Head, NY) knocked in the other three.
Molloy then put together another big inning, this time scoring seven runs in the fourth to take an 11-6 lead. The big blow was a grand slam by Patrick Miles. After the Lions added a run in the fifth, the Flyers got one back in the seventh on a solo blast from Summer, but they could pull no closer.
The Flyers are back in action on Monday, April 30, at UMass Lowell, currently ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
