Mercy College Baseball Edged at Nyack, 5-4
NYACK, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision at the hands of host Nyack College on Tuesday, April 24. Junior outfielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) went 2-for-3 for Mercy, while freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) was 2-for-4. Sophomore right-hander Bobby Engelhard (Oceanside, NY) tossed the first eight innings for the Flyers, allowing just three earned runs on five hits, and striking out five.
Mercy struck first, scoring a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from sophomore designated hitter Joe Benedict (Harrison, NY), and stretched the lead to 2-0 in the fifth.
Engelhard set down the first 11 batters he faced in order before yielding a base hit to Billy Gleason. He then carried the shutout into the seventh frame until the Warriors cut the deficit to 2-1.
Nyack took the lead in the eighth, getting a three-run home run from Bryan Yannuzzi. Mercy rallied to knot the game at 4-4 in top of the ninth, collecting hits from Tosado, Tesoriero and Summer, but the Warriors answered with an unearned run in the ninth to win 5-4.
Mercy will return to action on Wednesday, April 25, with an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader at Bridgeport.
