Mercy College Baseball Defeated by C.W. Post, 8-4

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-4 decision to visiting C.W. Post on Sunday, April 22.  Junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), freshman catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), and sophomore designated hitter Jonathan Cohen (Roslyn Heights, NY) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI on the day for the Flyers.

C.W. Post (21-13, 12-7 ECC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Kyle Walker delivered an RBI double and Frank Carrotta's sacrifice fly plated another run.  Mercy (2-28, 2-15 ECC) got one back in the second frame on an RBI single from Cohen and knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth as Ross connected for a solo home run.

The Pioneers regained the lead in the fifth, getting two runs on three hits, and then added four more in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of Mercy errors to stretch the lead to 8-2.

The Flyers cut the deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Dern.  They mounted a rally in the ninth, getting a pinch-hit RBI single from Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) before loading the bases with two outs, but C.W. Post reliever Kevin Gerard worked out of the jam.

Keith Karlsen went the first eight innings for C.W. Post, allowing two earned runs and eight hits, while striking out seven to earn the win. Walker finished the contest 4-for-5 with three runs driven in for the Pioneers. Mercy relievers Bobby Engelhard (Oceanside, NY) and Tom Maletta (Flushing, NY) each worked two scoreless innings.

The Flyers will return to action on Monday, April 23, at Dowling for another ECC game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
