 Steve Summer

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team was defeated by Concordia 4-3, on Friday, April 20.  The Flyers are now 2-25 overall and 2-12 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Clippers improved to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) led the Mercy offense, going 3-for-3 with one RBI.  Kevin Hickey (New Fairfield, CT) was 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and two runs batted in for Concordia.

The Flyers jumped on the scoreboard first, striking for a run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) got things going with a one-out single and then stole second base. Summer plated him with a base hit to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Mercy scored another run in the second frame, but Concordia got it back in the top of the third, taking advantage of an infield error to pull the score to 2-1.  Hickey then tied the game with a lead off solo home run in the fifth inning, and put Concordia ahead 3-2 in the seventh with another solo shot.

The Flyers responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Jonathan Cohen (Roslyn Heights, NY) led off with a double and scored on a pinch hit single off the bat of Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY).

Concordia pulled ahead again in the eighth as Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) connected for a solo home run with one out.  Mercy threatened in the ninth as Summer led off by drawing a walk.  Concordia starter Josh Likens (Owensboro, KY) then got a double play ball, but Mercy rallied again. Cohen drew another walk and Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) followed with a pinch hit single, but Concordia reliever Zach Staniewicz (Verplanck, NY) got the final out on a line drive to third base.

Junior left-hander Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) went the distance for Mercy, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out seven batters. Likens went 8 2/3 innings for Concordia, fanning nine while allowing three earned runs on nine hits.

Mercy returns to action on Saturday, April 21, at C.W. Post.  First pitch for the doubleheader is set for Noon. Fans can follow all of the action via LiveStats at: http://www.cwpostpioneers.com/live/base/xlive.htm.
