Mercy College Baseball Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-3
SUFFERN, NY - St. Thomas Aquinas College scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to put away a 9-3 decision over visiting Mercy College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball game on Wednesday, April 11. The Flyers dropped to 2-21 overall and 2-9 in ECC play, while the Spartans improved to 9-15 overall and 6-6 in league action.
Senior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) was 2-for-2 on the day for Mercy, while designated hitter Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run driven in, and senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
After St. Thomas Aquinas scored a run in the first inning, Mercy posted a pair of runs in the second on a two-run single from senior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL). The Spartans regained the lead at 3-2 after scoring a run in the third on a sacrifice fly. Mercy knotted the contest at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, but St. Thomas Aquinas got an RBI double from Mike Triana to take the lead for good at 4-3. The Spartans added a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Javier Diaz, before scoring four runs in the eighth on only one hit.
Triana finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for St. Thomas Aquinas, and John Mazzello added a 2-for-3 day with three runs scored. Jeremiah Ferris earned the win, allowing three runs and striking out six over 6 1/3 innings.
Mercy is slated to travel to UMass Lowell on Friday, April 13, before resuming ECC play at home on Saturday, April 14, versus Dowling.
