Chargers Hold Off Mercy Baseball, 8-5

WEST HAVEN, CT - The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 8-5, to host New Haven in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on Friday, April 6.

Third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Mercy (1-19, 1-7 ECC).  First baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) and catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) also drove in runs for the Flyers.

Mercy struck for a run in the top of the first as short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) doubled with one out and later scored on an infield error.  The Flyers added another unearned run in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead, but New Haven (18-7, 8-1 ECC) posted three runs in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI double from Ryan Aiken and a two-run home run off the bat of David Anderson.

After New Haven added a run in the third to take a 4-2 lead, Mercy evened the contest with a pair of runs in the fourth on a double by Summer and a base hit by Ross.  The contest remained knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth when the Chargers scored three times on three hits, building a 7-4 margin.

New Haven added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Aiken to stretch the lead to 8-4.  Mercy rallied in the ninth as Muscarella led off by drawing a walk and Ross followed with a double. Two batters later, Martinez plated a run with a ground out, but Matt Fealey closed the door for the Chargers.

Left-hander Sean Braille (Plainview, NY) gave Mercy two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, fanning one batter and walking none.  T.J. Phelan earned the win for New Haven, allowing two earned runs over six innings.

Mercy and New Haven will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7.  The Flyers will play host beginning at Noon.
