Mercy College Baseball Defeated by St. Thomas Aquinas College 23-5
ORANGEBURG, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 23-5 at the hands of host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday, April 3. The Flyers are now 1-18 overall and 1-6 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Freshman short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainview, NY) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for Mercy. Junior center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) added a 2-for-3 day.
Mercy took advantage of a Spartan error and got an RBI ground out from junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas went ahead with three runs in the third frame, getting a two-run triple from T.J. Varrichio and a sacrifice fly from Javier Diaz.
After the Spartans added four more runs in the fourth inning, Mercy got one back in the fifth as senior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) reached on an error, plating senior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY). St. Thomas Aquinas responded by sending 12 men to the plate and scoring nine times to stretch its lead to 16-2.
Mercy struck twice in the seventh inning, getting runs batted in from freshman Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) and Muscarella, but the Spartans answered again, this time with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. The Flyers would get one more run in the eighth on an RBI ground out from Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY).
John Mazzello led the St. Thomas Aquinas offense by going 5-for-6 with a pair of runs batted in, while Diaz finished 4-for-6 with a home run and five driven in.
Mercy is slated to take on Dominican College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 4, at Veteran's Memorial Park in Orangeburg, NY, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
