Mercy College Baseball Falls at Concordia, 14-8 and 6-0
BRONXVILLE, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair to host Concordia in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday, March 31, falling 14-8 in the opener and 6-0 in game two. The Flyers are now 1-17 overall and 1-5 in ECC action, while the Clippers improved to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Mercy catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) was 3-for-7 on the day with a pair of home runs and three runs batted in. Shortstop Justin Muscarella (Plainview, NY) was 2-for-4 in the opener for the Flyers, belting his first collegiate home run. Third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) went 2-for-3 with a double in game two.
Concordia opened up a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one, before adding two in the third and one in the fourth, stretching the margin to 7-0. Mercy plated two in the fifth, getting runs batted in from Muscarella and second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY), but the Clippers posted seven runs in the bottom of the frame, increasing the advantage to 14-2.
The Flyers came back with a run in the on a solo home run by Martinez, and then rallied for five more in the seventh, getting a solo shot from Muscarella and a two-run round-tripper from Martinez in the inning, but Concordia reliever Matt Featherstone held from there.
Game two saw Concordia score twice on four hits in the second inning to jump ahead again. The Clippers added a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Concordia starter Michael Quick went the distance for the shutout, scattering just four hits and striking out six. Greg Conway went 3-for-3 in the game with four runs batted in, while Michael Gagliardi combined to go 5-for-7 on the day with two home runs and four driven in.
Mercy will return to action on Tuesday, April 3, at ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas. That contest will be played at Veteran's Memorial Park in Orangeburg, NY, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
