Mercy College Baseball Slugs Way to First Win, 19-11 Over St. Thomas Aquinas

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team broke out in a big way, collecting a season-high 19 hits en route to its first win of the year, a 19-11 decision over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday, March 29.

Freshman designated hitter Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) paced the Mercy offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, and senior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) launched his second home run of the season in a 3-for-4 effort with three driven in.  Senior right-hander Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) picked up the win in relief.

St. Thomas Aquinas (3-13, 0-5 ECC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, getting runs batted in from short stop John Muller (Mahopac, NY) and third baseman T.J. Varrichio (Ardsley, NY), but Mercy responded with seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) drove in two on a double and Dern added another RBI double in the inning.

The Flyers (1-14, 1-3 ECC) added three runs in the fifth, getting an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) and taking advantage of a Spartan error to stretch the lead to 10-3.  St. Thomas Aquinas got two runs in the sixth inning to cut the margin to 10-5, but the Flyers got both back in the bottom of the inning on Martinez's two-run round tripper.

The Flyers then erupted for another seven-run inning in the seventh, stretching their lead to 19-5. Dern, left fielder Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY), center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL), and short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainview, NY) all drove in runs.
