Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
GARDEN CITY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team was defeated by host Adelphi in both ends of an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader on Saturday, March 24. The Panthers rallied for a 7-6 decision in the opener, before taking game two by a score of 7-1.
The first contest was a pitchers' duel between Mercy sophomore Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) and Adelphi sophomore Bobby Lanigan (Staten Island, NY). Both right-handers posted zeros early on until Mercy struck for a run in the sixth on an RBI single off the bat of first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY).
The Flyers (0-13, 0-2 ECC) got two more in the seventh on a two-run single from third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), and added another in the eighth, taking advantage of an Adelphi error to build a 4-0 lead.
Adelphi (9-5, 2-0 ECC) finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth, getting a two-run double from Mike Testani (Williston Park, NY) to cut the margin to 4-2. Mercy answered with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from Ross, and another run scoring single from Summer, but Adelphi sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the frame, pushing across five runs to come from behind. Testani drove in the tying and game-winning runs with a one-out, bases loaded single to right center field.
Moreno went 8 1/3 innings for the Flyers, scattering seven hits and striking out seven batters. Ross finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Summer went 2-for-4 with a pair knocked in.
Mercy jumped ahead again in game two, scoring a run on a fielder's choice in the second inning, but a five-run bottom of the frame for Adelphi would be too much to overcome. The Panthers went on to add single runs in the third and sixth innings for the final margin.
Michael Myers (Wantagh, NY) went the distance for Adelphi, allowing only three hits and fanning seven. Second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY), right fielder Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY), and Summer had the hits for Mercy.
The Flyers and Panthers will meet again on Sunday, March 25, in their final game of the series. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Adelphi
