Mercy College Baseball Defeated by Southeastern, 9-3
LAKELAND, FL - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision at the hands of host Southeastern University on Monday, March 12. The Flyers fell to 0-7 on the year, while the Fire improved to 18-10.
The top three in the Mercy batting order each had two hits on the day. Freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) collected two singles and a stolen base. Sophomore second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in.
Mercy jumped ahead early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Tesoriero led off with a base hit and Mundy moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Ross knocked him in with his first double and moved to third on the play at the plate before scoring on a ground out by first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY).
Southeastern got one back in the bottom of the first on a solo home run and knotted the game at 2-2 with another run in the third.
The Fire went ahead with another single run in the fifth frame, but Mercy tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring single from designated hitter Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY). Southeastern then put together a six-run inning in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin of 9-3.
Mercy will return to action on Thursday, March 15, with another non-conference game versus Bloomfield. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m. on the campus of Lynn University.
