Mercy College Baseball Falls to Briarcliffe and Caldwell
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, February 24, falling by a score of 20-1 to Briarcliffe and 10-7 to Caldwell. Mercy is now 0-3 on the year.
In the opener, Briarcliffe scored two runs in the first and third innings, adding single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 6-0 lead. Mercy got a run in the sixth on a ground out by freshman short stop Justin Muscarella (Plainview, NY). Briarcliffe then put the game out of reach with eight runs in the seventh and six more in the eighth.
Freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) went 2-for-4 for Mercy. Bobby Engelhard (Oceanside, NY) didn't allow an earned run in 1.1 innings pitched and Frank DeRosa (West Harrison, NY) pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
Caldwell built a 7-0 lead in the nightcap with four runs in the first and three in the third. The Flyers chipped away with three runs in the sixth, getting another RBI ground out from Muscarella and taking advantage of two errors and a wild pitch.
Mercy got two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-5. Second baseman Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) and left fielder Justin Roman (Silver Spring, MD) each had runs batted in. The Cougars answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, stretching the lead to 10-5. The Flyers rallied with a run in the eighth on a Mundy single and another in the ninth on an RBI ground out from catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), but Caldwell closed it out.
Mundy finished the game 3-for-4 and Tesoriero went 2-for-5 for the Flyers. Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) gave Mercy four innings of strong relief and Steve Parisi (Congers, NY) tossed a scoreless eighth frame.
Mercy returns to action on Sunday, February 25, in its final game at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. First-pitch has been moved up to 11:00 a.m. versus Felician.
