Mercy College Baseball Edged by Bloomfield in Opener, 5-4
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mercy College baseball team fell to Bloomfield by a score of 5-4, in its 2007 season opener at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Bloomfield improved to 3-1 on the year.
After Mercy starter Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) set the side down in order in the top of the first, the Flyers jumped in front with a run in the bottom of the inning on a steal of home by freshman center fielder Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY).
Moreno continued to shut down the Bloomfield offense and Mercy tacked on a run in the fourth as senior first baseman Steve Summer's (East Meadow, NY) single to center field plated junior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), who led off with a double down the right field line.
Two innings later, the Flyers stretched the lead to 3-0. Summer led off the sixth with a base hit to right field and senior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) knocked him in with a double down the right field line.
Bloomfield finally broke through in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a wild pitch in the inning. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of short stop Abe Heredia.
The Flyers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 4-4. Tesoriero led off with a walk and freshman Justin Muscarella (Plainview, NY) moved him over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Summer smacked a single down the left field line to knock in Tesoriero.
Bloomfield regained the lead in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI double from Delroy Cox. Mercy threatened in the bottom of the inning, but Bloomfield reliever Gabriel Donaldson got a two-out strike out with a pair of runners on to end the contest.
Summer and Tosado each went 3-for-4 on the night, while Martinez was 2-for-4 for Mercy. Moreno went six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits, and struck out five.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday, February 24, with a 3:00 p.m. contest versus Briarcliffe, followed by a 6:00 p.m. game versus Caldwell. Both games will be played at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC.
