NJIT Tops Mercy in Non-Conference Baseball, 8-1

            DOBBS FERRY, NY - Visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) defeated Mercy College by a score of 8-1, in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday, May 11.  It was both teams' regular season finale.  Mercy's record dropped to 5-38, while NJIT improved to 24-17.

            Mercy had nine hits on the day as junior outfielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL), sophomore outfielder Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) and junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) each had two, with Summer driving in the Flyers' run.

            NJIT jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, posting a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Highlanders added an unearned run in the third and then pushed across four more in the fifth frame, and another in the sixth, stretching the margin to 8-0.

            Mercy got its run in the eighth as Summer's double to left field plated Louis Bido (Bronx, NY). Bido had pinch run for senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY), who singled to lead off the inning.

            NJIT freshman left-hander Matt Melody earned the victory, going the first eight innings, allowing the one earned run, walking one, and striking out six.

            Right-handers Roberto Hilario (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and Tony Barcelo (Hialeah, FL) combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Mercy.  Hilario fanned four batters in two innings, and Barcelo struck out one in the ninth.
