Mercy Drops a Pair at New Haven, 13-1 & 2-0

NEW HAVEN, CT -  Mercy College dropped both ends of a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) baseball doubleheader at New Haven on Monday, May 1, falling 13-1 in the opener and 2-0 in game two.  Mercy is now 5-33 overall and 3-20 in NYCAC play, while New Haven moved to 30-8 overall and 21-2 in league action.

New Haven collected 20 hits in game one and jumped out to a 6-0 lead by scoring twice in the first inning and adding four more in the second.

Mercy got one run back in the third to cut the deficit to 6-1. Senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) singled home sophomore center fielder Matt Anzivino (Miami, FL), who had singled with one out.

New Haven came right back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to stretch the lead to 10-1 and added three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The nightcap was a pitcher's duel between Mercy's Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) and New Haven's Chris Smith. The Chargers pushed across one run in the first inning on a bases loaded walk, but Moreno worked out of it without further damage.

Mercy threatened to score in the second as junior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) doubled to lead off and junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) followed with a single, but this time it was Smith who worked out of the jam, stranding both runners in scoring position.

New Haven got its second run in the third as Michael Moras's sacrifice fly plated Evan Okon, who tripled to lead off the inning.

Mercy threatened again in the fifth, this time with two outs.  Freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) first singled to center field and DeMuria followed with another base hit.  Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but Smith battled through it, getting a strikeout to end the inning.

Neither team would score again and Dan Gulino pitched tossed two innings of one-hit relief to close it out for the Chargers.

Moreno allowed just six hits over six innings for Mercy, striking out four. Johnson and Summer each went 2-for-3 in game two.

Mercy returns to action on Wednesday at Concordia. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
