Dowling Downs Mercy Baseball, 10-0
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Dowling College collected 15 hits en route to a 10-0 decision over host Mercy College in a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) baseball game on Sunday, April 30. Mercy's record fell to 5-31 overall and 3-18 in NYCAC play, while Dowling improved to 24-12 overall and 16-6 in the league.
Junior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) had two of Mercy's five hits on the day, an infield single in the first frame and another base hit in the third. Sophomore right-hander Robert Hilario (Sleepy Hollow, NY) gave the Flyers eight innings of strong relief, not allowing an earned run while striking out seven batters.
Senior centerfielder Bryan Baccarella (Hauppauge, NY) led the Dowling offense, going 4-for-5 with four runs batted in. Junior short stop Wilberto Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) also went 4-for-5 for the Golden Lions. Sophomore Brent Lotito (Miller Place, NY) tossed seven scoreless innings for Dowling, allowing just three hits and fanning four to earn the win.
Dowling sent 10 men to the plate in the top of the first, scoring five times for an early lead. Baccarella delivered a two-run triple in the inning and Ortiz also knocked in a run for the Golden Lions.
Dowling batted around again in the second stanza, this time plating four runs to stretch the margin to 9-0. Baccarella drove in two more runs with a single.
The Golden Lions added a single run in the sixth, taking advantage of a Mercy error, and after Lotito's scoreless seven innings, the Dowling bullpen closed it out with two more innings of scoreless relief.
Mercy returns to action on Monday, May 1, traveling to the University of New Haven for a NYCAC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
