Mercy Baseball Falls to New Haven, 9-2

            DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The University of New Haven defeated host Mercy College  by a score of 9-2, on Wednesday, April 26, in a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) baseball game.  Mercy's record dropped to 5-28 overall and 3-15 in NYCAC play. New Haven improved to 25-8 overall and 16-2 in league action.

            Mercy junior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) went 2-for-4, while sophomore right fielder Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) and junior second baseman Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) each drove in runs.  

            Junior designated hitter Ryan Aiken (Enfield, CT) led New Haven's 15-hit attack by going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in. Junior center fielder Chris Flynn (Milford, CT) and freshman third baseman Ken Appel (Orange, CT) each went 3-for-5 for the Chargers.

            New Haven got on the scoreboard first, getting a run-scoring single with two outs in the second inning from junior right fielder David Anderson (Plainfield, NJ).

            The Flyers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a New Haven error and getting another run on Lozano's successful safety squeeze.

            After scoreless third and fourth innings, New Haven sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits and one Mercy error to regain the lead at 7-2. Appel's double drove in the tying run and Aiken later doubled to plate two more.

            The Chargers added a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Aiken, and pushed across one more in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher Michael Moras (Orange, CT).

            After scoring their two runs in the second, the Flyers were held in check by New Haven senior starter Jim O'Malia (Larksville, PA), who went seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six to earn the win.

            Sophomore right-hander Roberto Hilario (Sleepy Hollow, NY) went the first five innings for Mercy, allowing six earned runs and fanning three.  Freshman Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) gave the Flyers four innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out four.

            The Flyers are off until Saturday, April 29, when they will travel to Dowling for a NYCAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
