Concordia Rallies Past Mercy in NYCAC Baseball, 13-7
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 13-7 decision to visiting Concordia in a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) game on Tuesday, April 25. Mercy's record fell to 5-27 overall and 3-14 in league play, while Concordia improved to 21-18 overall and 10-7 in NYCAC action.
Mercy took a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning, but Concordia rallied back to score 11 runs over the final three innings. Senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) and junior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) each collected three hits for Mercy. Sophomore center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) went 2-for-4, including his first home run, and knocked in four runs. Sophomore designated hitter Louis Bido (Bronx, NY) also belted his first round-tripper as he went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Flyers.
Concordia recorded 16 hits in the contest, as sophomore third baseman Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) went 3-for-6, and junior second baseman Michael Gagliardi (Tarrytown, NY) was 3-for-5 with one run batted in. Freshman Giuseppe Granitto (Bronx, NY) earned the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
With the scored tied 1-1, Mercy posted three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Tosado knocked in two runs with a double and later scored the third run.
Concordia got the run back in the fourth on a home run off the bat of senior Eddie Martinez (Stamford, CT), but Mercy answered in the bottom of the frame with Bido's solo shot over the left field fence.
Mercy stretched its lead to 7-2 in the fifth as Mercado got things going with a one out single through the left side and Tosado followed with his blast down the left field line.
Concordia cut the deficit to 7-4 in the seventh, getting a sacrifice fly from Martinez and another run on a passed ball.
The Clippers then erupted for five runs in the eighth, recording five hits in the inning and taking advantage of two Mercy errors to take the lead at 9-7, and then put it away with four more runs in the ninth.
Senior right-hander Steve Parisi (Congers, NY) pitched well for the Flyers, allowing just two earned runs over 6.1 innings, scattering eight hits in the no-decision.
Mercy returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, at home versus the University of New Haven. First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
