Mercy Baseball Outslugged by Concordia, 16-7

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 16-7 decision at the hands of visiting Concordia College in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play on Wednesday, April 19. The Flyers fell to 5-24 overall and 3-13 in NYCAC action, while Concordia improved to 20-18 overall and 9-7 in league play.

The game featured a total of 35 hits, 22 for Concordia and 13 for Mercy. Sophomore Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) led the Flyers' offense by going 3-for-4 with four runs driven in. Junior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL), sophomore center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) and freshman catcher Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) had two hits each for Mercy.

Concordia built up a 10-0 lead, scoring single runs in the second and fourth innings, before adding three in the fifth, and five in the sixth.

Mercy broke through in the bottom of the sixth, posting two unearned runs to cut the deficit to 10-2. Mercado and Johnson each had hits in the inning, and Hendricks forced in a run by getting hit by a pitch.

Concordia responded with four runs in the top of the seventh, stretching the lead to 14-2.  The Clippers registered five hits in the inning and took advantage of a Mercy error.

Mercy got three runs back in the eighth, cutting the margin to 14-5. Hendricks and sophomore Kevin Kelly (Brewster, NY) each drove in runs for the Flyers.

After the Clippers answered with two runs in the top of the ninth, Mercy got two right back in the bottom of the frame on a double off the bat of Hendricks, but that would be as close as the Flyers would get.

Mercy returns to action on Thursday, April 20, with a doubleheader at Columbia Union College.
