Dominican Tops Mercy Baseball, 5-1

BLAUVELT, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision at the hands of host Dominican College in a non-conference game held at Veteran's Memorial Park.  Mercy's record fell to 5-23 on the year, while Dominican improved to 26-12.

Senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) led the Flyers' offense by going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Junior short stop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) extended his hitting streak to six straight games with a single in three at bats and junior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) went 2-for-4.

Dominican took an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk drawn by Eliezer Nunez (Brooklyn, NY), and added an unearned run in the second frame that stretched the margin to 2-0.

The Chargers extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Frank Maynard, Jr. (Brooklyn, NY).

Mercy responded with a run in the top of the seventh.  DeMuria recorded a one-out single to center field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) followed with a double to left field, plating DeMuria and cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Flyers could pull no closer as Dominican posted two more insurance runs in the bottom of the frame and held the Mercy offense scoreless for the final two innings.

Sophomore right hander Roberto Hilaro (Sleepy Hollow, NY) fanned eight batters in six innings, allowing three earned runs.

Mercy returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, with a home game against New York Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Concordia.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
