Falls at STAC, 7-1
ORANGEBURG, NY - St. Thomas Aquinas College collected 20 hits en route to a 7-1 victory over visiting Mercy College in a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) baseball game on Monday afternoon. Mercy's record fell to 5-22 overall and 3-12 in NYCAC play, while the Spartans improved to 19-13 overall and 10-5 in the league.
Sophomore center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) and junior left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) each went 2-for-4 on the day for Mercy. Junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) extended his hitting streak to seven straight games and junior shortstop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) stretched his streak to five straight.
St. Thomas Aquinas struck first, posting a run on an RBI double from Javier Diaz in the bottom of the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning, Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Sophomore right fielder Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) led off by reaching on an error and freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Tosado then followed with an RBI single.
The Spartans answered in the bottom of the frame, regaining the lead at 3-1, as Diaz drove in two more runs with a single.
St. Thomas Aquinas added two runs in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, while Anthony Marcangelo held the Flyer offense in check.
Marcangelo went eight innings, striking out nine batters and allowing no earned runs for St. Thomas Aquinas. Freshman Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) took the loss for Mercy, giving up five earned runs in five innings. He struck out three batters and walked none. Junior Brad Lozano (Miami, FL) allowed one earned run in three innings of relief work.
Mercy is back in action again on Tuesday, April 18, with a non-conference game at Dominican College. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
