Molloy Tops Mercy Baseball, 16-12

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 16-12 decision at the hands of visiting Molloy College on Tuesday, April 11.  The contest featured 28 total hits (Mercy 11, Molloy 17), 14 walks and saw nine pitchers take the mound. The Flyers fell to 5-19 overall and 3-9 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play, while Molloy improved to 14-17 overall and 6-6 in the league.

Junior leftfielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) paced the Mercy offense, going 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) was 2-for-4 with a run driven and three scored for the Flyers. Junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) and sophomore center fielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) each drove in two runs.

Molloy scored four runs in the third and another in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Mercy offense was held hitless by Molloy starter Steven Stewart for the first three innings, but exploded for six runs, sending 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 edge.

The Lions came right back with four runs in the fifth to regain the lead at 9-6.  Mercy got one unearned run back in the bottom of the stanza, cutting the deficit to 9-7.

The Flyers erupted again in the bottom of the sixth, this time sending eight men to the plate and scoring five runs on five hits to take back the lead at 12-9. Summer knocked in the go ahead run with a double to left center, while Mercado and Tosado also drove in runs.

After a scoreless seventh, the Molloy offense put together its biggest inning in the eighth, sending 11 men to the plate and pushing across seven runs to build what would be the final margin of 16-12. Drew Adler knocked in what would be the game-winning run with a two-run double down the right field line.

Molloy reliever Mark Broadhead shut the door as he retired all 10 batters he faced in order, striking out four to earn the victory.

Mercy is back in action again on Saturday, April 15, at home with a doubleheader versus St. Thomas Aquinas College, beginning at noon.
