Mercy Baseball Falls to Adelphi, 16-2
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Adelphi University recorded 19 hits en route to a 16-2 decision over host Mercy College on Monday, April 10. The loss dropped Mercy's record to 5-18 overall and 3-8 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play, while Adelphi improved to 10-13 overall and 7-4 in league action.
Mercy posted 10 hits on the day, but left 11 men on base. Junior short stop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY), senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) and junior centerfielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) had two hits each for the Flyers.
Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead, recording three hits in the first inning and getting a run-scoring ground out from junior catcher Stephen Malvagna (East Meadow, NY).
Two innings later, senior second baseman Doug Anderson (Oyster Bay, NY) and senior designated hitter Brian Rath (Wantagh, NY) led off with back-to-back singles before Malvagna cleared the left field fence with a three-run home run to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
Mercy threatened to score in the bottom of the third with two outs. After a pair of ground balls, sophomore designated hitter Nicodemus Hendricks (New York, NY) drew a walk and junior left fielder Joe Mercardo (Orlando, FL) dropped down a bunt base hit, but Adelphi's Bobby Lanigan (Staten Island, NY) was able to work out of the jam.
Adelphi struck again in the fifth, getting a two-out solo home run off the bat of sophomore third baseman Joe Maranino (Bronx, NY), and tacked on two more in the sixth, stretching the lead to 7-0.
The Panthers then broke the game wide open in the eighth, scoring eight times as they sent 12 men to the plate.
Mercy broke through with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Ross, Summer and DeMuria put together consecutive singles to load the bases with one out, and two batters later Tosado laced a two-out single to center field, knocking in two.
Lanigan struck out eight batters over eight innings to earn the win for Adelphi. Anderson and Rath finished the contest with three hits apiece, while Malvagna knocked in five runs on the day.
Mercy is back in action again on Tuesday, April 11, at home versus Molloy in another NYCAC contest that begins at 3:30 p.m.
