Adelphi Sweeps Doubleheader from Mercy Baseball

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader by identical scores of 9-2, at the hands of host Adelphi University on Sunday, April 9.  Mercy's record fell to 5-17 overall and 3-7 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) action, while Adelphi improved to 9-14 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Senior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) went 2-for-4 in the opener for Mercy, while junior catcher Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY) had a pair of hits on the day to give himself a four-game hitting streak.  Sophomore Kevin Kelly (Brewster, NY) drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly in each contest.

After Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Mercy tied the game in the top of the second as DeMuria's infield out knocked in junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY), who led off with a double.

The Panthers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 4-1. Adelphi got a two-run single from Thomas Cali and another run-scoring single from Mike Colonna.

The Flyers got one back in the third on Kelly's sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 4-2, but that would be as close as they would get as Adelphi went on to post a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth and sixth innings.

Adelphi jumped out to an early lead again in game two, this time registering three runs in the first inning, two coming on a double by Brian Rath.

The Panthers added another run in the second, four more in the fifth and another in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead.

Mercy was held scoreless through the first six innings before breaking through in the seventh. Freshman second baseman Russ Johnson (Saugerties, NY) plated the first run on a base hit to left field and Kelly drove in the other run on another sacrifice fly, but Adelphi's Frank Valeriano was able to close it out without further damage.

Mercy and Adelphi will meet again on Monday, April 10, in the final game of their series.  First-pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
