Molloy Slips Past Mercy in NYCAC Baseball, 3-1

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Freshman right hander Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) continued his solid efforts on the mound, allowing just two earned runs on five hits, but was on the short end of a pitchers' duel as the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Molloy on Tuesday, April 4. Mercy's record fell to 5-15 overall and 3-5 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play. Molloy improved to 10-16 overall and 3-5 in league action.

Molloy reached Moreno for one run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Darren Bell.  The Lions pushed across another run in the second on a Thomas Reo solo home run.

Mercy broke up a no-hit bid by Christopher Schiro in the fifth and cut the deficit to 2-1 in the process.  Junior catcher Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY) first reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an infield out.  He moved to third on another ground ball, and after freshman second baseman Russ Johnson (Saugerties, NY) was hit by a pitch, DeMayo scored on an infield hit from sophomore designated hitter Kevin Kelly (Brewster, NY).

Molloy got the run back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a Mercy error after a double from Drew Adler and an infield hit by Patrick Walsh.

Moreno held the Lions scoreless from there, but Schiro was up to the task for Molloy, limiting the Flyers to just one more hit in the ninth, a double from DeMayo, before Mark Broadhead came in to close it out.

Mercy returns to action on Saturday, April 8, with another key NYCAC doubleheader at Adelphi.  The first contest will begin at noon.
