Queens College Takes a Pair from Mercy Baseball, 8-1 & 11-4
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell in
both ends of a doubleheader at the hands of visiting Queens College
on Saturday, April 1. Queens took game one by a score of 8-1,
before winning game two, 11-4. The Flyers saw their win streak
stopped at five as they fell to 5-13 overall and 3-3 in New York
Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play. Queens improved to 2-6
overall and 2-4 in league action.
Junior
Anthony Russo (New Hyde Park, NY) jumped on the
first pitch of the day and sent it over the left field fence for
his first home run of the season and gave Queens an early 1-0 lead
in the opener. Junior third baseman Maurice Santana
(Queens, NY) later tripled in the inning with two men on,
and junior first baseman Yi-Chang Chaing (Taipei,
Taiwan) followed with an RBI single to increase the margin
to 4-0.
While junior
Robert Standish (Valley Stream, NY) was holding
Mercy scoreless, the Queens offense added another run in the top of
the third inning on an RBI single by junior Michael
Williams (Jamaica, NY).
Mercy
threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out, but the
Flyers could only manage one run on a sacrifice fly from senior
left fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL).
Queens
tacked on three more runs in the eighth, collecting three hits in
the inning and taking advantage of a Mercy error to stretch the
lead to what would be the final score of 8-1.
Sophomore
Sean Braille (Plainview, NY) allowed five earned
runs over 7.1 innings for Mercy. Freshman Matt Moreno
(Harrison, NY) did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of
relief. Senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip,
NY) went 3-for-4 for the Flyers.
Standish
went 6.2 innings for Queens, allowing just one run on six hits and
striking out five to earn the win. Junior Daniel Weinman
(New Hyde Park, NY) gave the Knights 2.1 innings of
scoreless relief.
Queens went
ahead early again in the nightcap, striking for three runs in the
top of the second inning. Junior Michael Hennessey (West
Babylon, NY) provided the first two runs on a double and
Russo later added the third run on a sacrifice fly.
The Flyers
responded with three runs of their own to tie that game in the
bottom of the second. DeMuria plated the first run with a double
that brought in junior third baseman Steve Summer (East
Meadow, NY) who had walked to lead off. Two batters later,
junior right fielder Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge,
NY) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home
Mercado and freshman second baseman Russ Johnson
(Saugerties, NY) knocked in another run on a fielder's
choice.
After Queens
added three more runs in the top of the third to regain the lead at
6-3, Mercy's junior shortstop Craig Ross (Bellmore,
NY) led off the bottom of the stanza with a solo home run,
his first of the year, to cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Knights
came right back again in the fourth, this time sending eight men to
the plate and taking advantage of a pair of Mercy errors to push
across three more runs and stretch the margin to 9-4. They would
add two more in the seventh on run scoring singles from Santana and
freshman designated hitter Tyler Abrams (Bronx,
NY).
DeMuria had
two hits in the game for Mercy, finishing the day 5-for-7. Senior
Tony Barcelo (Hialeah, FL) took the loss and
sophomore Roberto Hilario (Sleepy Hollow, NY)
allowed no earned runs over 3.1 innings of relief work.
Junior
Brian Giraldi (Oyster Bay, NY) allowed just five
hits over six innings to earn the win for Queens. Williams and
Abrams each had three hits in the contest.
The two
teams will meet again on Sunday, April 2, for the final game of the
series at Queens. First pitch is set for noon.
