Mercy Baseball Posts 15 hits in 12-3 Win Over Mount St. Vincent

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team exploded for 15 hits and senior Steve Parisi (Congers) went the distance in a 12-3 non-conference win over visiting Mount St. Vincent on Thursday, March 30. The win was the Flyers' fifth straight as they improved to 5-11 overall.  Mount St. Vincent fell to 8-11.

Parisi gave Mercy its fourth complete game during the win streak as he scattered 12 singles, but got Mount St. Vincent to bounce into four double plays and struck out three. Junior shortstop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) and junior right fielder Eugene DeMayo (Olive Bridge, NY) each had three hits on the day for Mercy, while junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly.

Mount St. Vincent scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Shortstop Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY) had an RBI single in the inning.

After being held without a hit through the first two innings, Mercy got a one out single from freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) in the third after DeMayo had drawn a walk.  Ross followed with a run-scoring double and Summer plated the next run with his sacrifice fly to right field.  Junior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) then gave Mercy a 3-2 lead with a base hit up the middle that brought home Ross.

Mount St. Vincent got one back in the top of the fourth to knot that game at 3-3. Brendan Russo (Westbury, NY) singled with one out and quickly stole second base.  Logan Mauzy (Homer, NY) knocked him in with a single, but two batters later he was gunned down trying to steal by Martinez to end the threat.

Mercy responded by posting five more hits and taking advantage of an error to score five times and build and 8-3 lead in the bottom of the frame. Summer had a two-run double in the inning, while Johnson, Ross and DeMayo also knocked in runs.

The Flyers went on to add single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, and two more in the eighth, while Parisi took advantage of three double plays over the final five innings to put it away.

Nathan Todd (Holyoke, MA) took the loss for Mount St. Vincent. Russo finished the day 3-for-4, while Zach Munroe (Milford, CT) and Cuozzo each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Mercy returns to action on Saturday, April 1, with a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at home against Queens College.  First pitch is slated for noon.
