Mercy College Baseball Stretches Win Streak to Four with 5-4 Decision at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Mercy College baseball team extended its win streak to four straight by defeating host Molloy College, 5-4, on Wednesday, March 29. The Flyers improved to 4-11 overall and 3-1 in New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) play. Molloy's record fell to 8-14 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Mercy got another strong pitching performance as sophomore Roberto Hilario (Sleepy Hollow, NY) notched his first win of the year, going 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Sophomore Matt Anzivino (Miami, FL) gave Mercy 2.2 innings of shutout relief, striking out three batters for his first save of the season.  Junior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of base hits to lead the offense.

Mercy jumped out to an early lead, posting three runs on two hits and two Molloy errors in the top of the first inning. Junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) had an RBI ground out in the inning, knocking in junior shortstop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) who doubled.

Molloy got two runs back in the third, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Thomas Reo plated one run with a single and the other run scored on an infield out.

Mercy answered with a run in the fourth on an RBI single off the bat of senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY), but Molloy came right back with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.

After a scoreless fifth inning, junior right fielder Joe Mercado (Orlando, FL) gave Mercy at 5-3 advantage with a double that brought home Summer who drew a one out walk.

Molloy posted a run in the bottom of the fifth, trimming the Mercy lead to 5-4, but Hilario worked out of the inning and Anzivino went on to shut the door.

Mercy is back in action again on Thursday, March 30, taking on Mount St. Vincent at home. First pitch is set for 3:15 p.m.
