Mercy Baseball Wins Third Straight with 8-3 Decision Over CCNY

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team captured its third straight victory, taking The City College of New York in a non-conference game by a score of 8-3, on Tuesday, March 28.  Mercy improved its record to 3-11 on the year, while the Beavers fell to 0-14.

Freshman right-hander Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) went the distance for Mercy, scattering seven hits and struck out nine while not allowing walk or an earned run. Junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Moreno battled through a bumpy start in the first inning as CCNY posted a pair of runs on two hits and two errors. Jose Lopez (New York, NY) had an RBI single in the inning for the Beavers.

Mercy answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 2-2. Freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) and sophomore designated hitter Kevin Kelly (Brewster, NY) led off with back-to-back walks.  Two batters later Summer delivered his first RBI with a single down the left field line.  Summer and Kelly later pulled off a double steal of second base and home for the second run.

While Moreno was posting zeros, Mercy went ahead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Johnson and added another unearned run in the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage.

CCNY cut the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth, taking advantage of a Mercy error and another run scoring single from Lopez.

Mercy then broke the game open by posting four runs in the eighth, getting a two run single from Summer in the inning, and Moreno allowed just one hit over the final three innings to close out his first win of the season.

Mercy had nine hits on the day, getting two each from Kelly, junior short stop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY), senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) and Summer.

Emilio Lara (Port Chester, NY) went seven innings in defeat for CCNY, allowing four earned runs. Lopez finished the day 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Beavers.

Mercy is back in action again on Wednesday, March 29, with a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) game at Molloy.
