Mercy Baseball Earns First Win in Split
with C.W. Post
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team recorded its first win of the season, splitting a NYCAC doubleheader with visiting C.W. Post on Saturday, March 25. The Pioneers took the opening game 6-0, before Mercy came from behind for a 2-1 victory in game two. Mercy is now 1-11 overall and 1-1 in NYCAC action. C.W. Post's record moves to 3-13-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Senior right-hander Tony Barcelo (Hialeah, FL) scattered seven singles in game two for Mercy, but faced just three batters over the minimum as he induced four double plays to earn the victory. Barcelo walked one and struck out one.
C.W. Post's lone run came in the top of the first as the Pioneers got three straight base hits to open the frame and load the bases. The run came across on the first double play ball and Barcelo would work out of further damage.
Mercy got the run back in the bottom of the third as senior first baseman Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) got things going with a two-out walk. Junior shortstop Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) followed with a double to left center to drive home DeMuria and knot the contest at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when sophomore designated hitter Kevin Kelly (Brewster, NY) drew a two-out walk. After sophomore Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) reached on an infield error, sophomore centerfielder B.J. Harring (Sandwich, MA) drew another walk to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) then drew the third walk of the inning to bring home what would be the game-winning run as Barcelo went on to work a one-two-three seventh and final inning.
In the opener, C.W. Post broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman catcher Brian Anderson (Nesconset, NY) led off with a walk and sophomore left fielder Brian Chenicek (Levittown, NY) followed with a single. Two batters later a bloop single off the bat of sophomore second baseman Joe Mare (Whitestone, NY) knocked in one run and sophomore center fielder Tim Sylvester (Farmingdale, NY) plated the other run with a successful squeeze bunt.
Junior first baseman Frank Carrotta (Glen Cove, NY) led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run down the right field line and senior right fielder Kyle Klimkowski (Westbury, NY) later tripled down the right field line, plating two more to give C.W. Post a 5-0 advantage.
The Pioneers tacked on one more run in the eighth inning on a run-scoring double by Sylvester.
Sophomore left-hander Kevin Gerard (Levittown, NY) went the distance for the Pioneers, allowing just three hits and fanning six to earn the shutout victory.
Junior third baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) had a double for the Flyers, while DeMuria and junior catcher Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY) each added a single.
The two teams will close out their three-game series with a single game on Sunday, March 26, at C.W. Post. First-pitch is set for noon.
