Mercy Hosts Pink Weeks to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

The Mercy College Department of Athletics will be hosting “Pink Weeks,” in support of breast cancer awareness from October 15-28, 2010.

Volleyball, women’s and men’s soccer, and field hockey are joining forces to bring awareness on campus.

“Breast cancer is such an important topic,” said Director of Athletics Patricia Kennedy. “We want to do our part to help end this terrible disease.”

Proceeds from all events will support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. In addition to turning Mercy pink, each team will distribute literature detailing the risks of breast cancer and the importance of breast cancer screenings and mammograms.

Field hockey will sponsor “Stick it to Cancer” on Friday, October 15, in a game against Limestone (S.C.) College. The team will sell special, limited edition t-shirts, as well as concessions.

Women’s and men’s soccer will combine on Saturday, October 23, as the Mavericks host LIU-C.W. Post in a doubleheader at noon and three o’clock. The teams will wear specially designed shirts for the occasion.

Volleyball will promote breast cancer awareness on Tuesday, October 26, and Thursday, October 28, with matches against NYIT and Bridgeport. They, too, will wear specially designed shirts.

In September of this year, the field hockey and women’s basketball teams participated in the Susan G. Komen NYC Race for the Cure in Central Park, raising over $1,300.
