Mercy College Athletics Raises Funds in the
Community
Causes Include Haitian Relief and Breast Cancer
Awareness
The Mercy College Department of Athletics has been busy throughout
the last month collecting donations and spreading awareness for two
social causes: Haitian relief and breast cancer awareness. The
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has taken a leadership role in
this endeavor.
The SAAC kicked off the fundraising efforts on January 30, 2010,
at a home basketball doubleheader. In support of the people of
Haiti, the SAAC was able to raise over $500. Mercy College donated
the entire proceeds from ticket sales to UNICEF to support the
cause.
On February 13, the women’s basketball team participated in
the WBCA’s Pink Zone! initiative, raising funds and awareness
for breast cancer research. To date, over $554 has been raised, as
the SAAC solicited donations and gifts, which were then raffled
off.
Mercy College is a private, nonprofit institution founded in 1950,
