DOBBS FERRY, NY -Mercy College participated in The National American Education Week with Yonkers school district pre-kindergarten students from Public School 22 on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. As part of the program, several of Mercy College's student-athletes spent time conducting mini-clinics with the children, covering the sports of basketball, soccer and volleyball, followed by an autograph session.
"Looking into the eyes of our young guests and those of the student-athlete leaders who worked with them, I was reminded of hope," said Dr. Darryl Bullock, advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. "Marian Wright Edelman once noted that ‘we are living in a time of unbearable dissonance between promise and performance.' Today we took steps toward bridging the divide and supporting the aspirations of our new friends. That is a Mercy College core value."

Faculty of Mercy College spoke with parents about the necessity of college preparation for their children. Mercy College student volunteers and faculty members also assisted in special sessions for the children on reading, science and computers.
Patricia Chute, Ed.D, dean, School of Health and Natural Sciences explained Mercy College's focus on encouraging young students to view themselves as future college students. "Children are naturally fascinated with school. Providing them with an opportunity to look into the future and see the possibilities has always been a part of child development. A day at Mercy College gives these children an early look at what they can become," Chute said.
The School of Education's motto "Changing Minds...Changing Lives" derives from the belief that children need to become aware that education opens doors for them. After family, education can be the most important influence in the direction of their lives.

According to Dr. Petronella Feaster, chair, School Leadership Department, education plays a significant role in children's lives. No other force will be as strong in shaping their futures or in dictating the quality of lives they will lead. "Many children and parents are familiar with the book The Little Engine That Could. Always believe you can, and you will be successful. You can go as long and as far as your desire and hard work will take you. The message in the book serves as a valuable lesson for life. Mercy College wants to contribute to this theme."
