Mercy's Wellington and Tukel Named ECC Scholar Athletes; Ross and Madick Earn Spots on ECC Honor Roll

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College seniors Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) and Zeki Tukel (Istanbul, Turkey) have been named East Coast Conference (ECC) Scholar Athletes for their respective sports.  Seniors Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) and Jessica Madick (Tarzana, CA) were also honored, earning spots on the ECC Spring Scholar Athlete Honor Roll. The honorees were selected by the conference coaches of each respective sport.

Wellington, a Criminal Justice major on the men's basketball team, posted a 3.39 GPA and was honored as a member of the ECC All-Conference Second Team. He averaged 12.3 points per game to lead the Mavericks this season and also led the team in assists with 2.7 per game. Wellington ranked first in the conference in three-pointers made per game, 11th in assists, 12th in steals and 15th in scoring. He finished his collegiate career with 1,021 points scored, which is good for 10th all-time among Mavericks and finished seventh all-time in assists and eighth in steals. A two-time ECC All-Academic honoree and two-time ECC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll member, Wellington also earned ECC Player of the Week and a spot on the PrestoSports/MBWA Honor Roll on February 18.

Tukel earned a 3.63 GPA as a Psychology major for the men's tennis team. He posted a 4-6 overall singles record and combined for a 4-7 doubles mark at the No. 1 flight. Along the way, he played four of the top 12 singles players in the nation. Tukel won three straight No. 1 singles matches against Millersville, Queens and Adelphi in the spring and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA East Regionals in the fall. He shared the honor with Dowling's Jose Gomez.

A pitcher and designated player for the softball squad, Madick posted a 3.22 GPA as a Legal Studies/Political Science major. She was second on the team with a .315 batting average, 35 hits and a .405 slugging percentage to go with 13 runs batted in. Madick posted seven multi-hit games, a 10-game hitting streak and belted home runs in each end of a doubleheader versus Nyack.  In the pitcher's circle she tossed a complete game two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts against Fisher College and earned another win against ECC foe Dowling.

Ross, a First Team All-Conference selection at third base for the baseball team, compiled a 3.25 GPA as a Business Administration major. He led the Mavericks in batting average at .319 and hits with 42. He also scored 19 runs and drove in 14. During the course of the season, Ross had an 11-game hitting streak, the longest of any Maverick this season. He was second on the team in extra base hits with 10 and led the club in slugging percentage (.415). He also played well at the hot corner with a .945 fielding percentage. Ross batted .360 against ECC opponents with a .483 slugging percentage.
