Five Mercy College Student-Athletes Earn Spots on ECC Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Rolls

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Mercy College had student-athletes from all five of its Fall sports named to the East Coast Conference (ECC) Scholar-Athlete Honor Rolls. The five Mavericks selected were: Thomas Cannariato (Goshen, NY), Katelyn Klobus (Averill Park, NY), Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Casey Kondelka (Bloomingburg, NY), and Natalee Carty (Kingston, Jamaica). The honorees were selected by the conference coaches of each respective sport.

Cannariato, a senior on the men's cross country team and a mathematics major, posted a 3.57 grade point average through the fall. A 2006 ECC All-Academic selection, he was frequently Mercy's top finisher, leading the Mavericks at the ECC Championships by finishing the 8k course with a time of 31:35. Cannariato also paced the men's squad at the NCAA II Regionals. He is now pursuing a master's degree in adolescent education.

A junior psychology major with a 3.35 grade point average, Klobus has been Mercy's top finisher in every race since her arrival on campus in the Fall of 2005. This year she placed 15th overall at the ECC Championships, with a time of 21:42 in the 5k race. Klobus was an All-ECC Second Team performer in the Fall of 2006 and is a two-time ECC All-Academic honoree.

Spence is a sophomore goalkeeper on the men's soccer team with a 3.69 grade point average as a media studies/journalism major and was a 2006 ECC All-Academic honoree. This year he helped the Mavericks to the number four seed in the ECC Tournament and a final regional ranking of No. 9, by posting a 1.51 goals against average, with four shutouts, and a .784 save percentage. His shutouts came in victories over Goldey Beacom, St. Thomas Aquinas, Queens, and the University of the District of Columbia.  Spence also registered wins versus Felician (3-1), New Haven (2-1), and Concordia (4-3).  He made double-digit saves in three games, racking up a career-high 12 versus Queens and earned one ECC Defensive Player of the Week honor.

A sophomore defender on the women's soccer team, Kondelka carries a 3.49 grade point average while pursuing her bachelor's degree in mathematics.  She was an ECC All-Academic selection in 2006, and was named to the All-ECC Third Team this year.  Kondelka has anchored the Mavericks' backfield, playing and starting in 25 games since joining the program.  This year she helped an improving Mercy defense post a 4-2 win over Concordia, and a 2-1 victory versus Felician.

Carty is a senior psychology major on the women's volleyball team with a 3.71 grade point average, earning ECC All-Academic honors in the Fall of 2006 and playing on the 2005 NCAA Tournament team. She finished second on the team in digs (342) and digs per game (3.56) this year. Carty recorded double-digit kills in eight matches, posting a season-high 19 on two occasions.  She also registered double-digit digs in 17 matches, including a career-high 32 versus Assumption.
